Hannah Souter British, b. 1980
Showing for the very first time in Cornwall, Cambridgeshire based silversmith Hannah Souter’s sculptural fine jewellery is inspired by delicate organic structures – especially of seed pods and buds – found in nature. By combining subtle surface textures with contrasting finishes, Souters’ unique silver creations include 18ct gold detail, freshwater pearls, or semi-precious beads.
'Whilst studying Goldsmithing, Silversmithing and Jewellery Design at Kent Institute of Art and Design, I found that my work was strongly influenced by my love of organic forms, in particular seed pods and buds. After graduating with a first class honours degree I continued to develop this theme on a post-graduate residency at Bishopsland Workshops, Reading. My residency allowed me to explore and experiment further the three dimensional qualities of jewellery that interest me most; shape and texture.
'Having completed my year at Bishopsland Workshops in August 2003, I moved back to Cambridgeshire where I set up my own workshop. Here, inspired by the surrounding countryside, I make sculptural jewellery that reflects the beauty and delicate structures found in nature.
'Comprising of hand press-formed and individually fabricated units, my jewellery combines subtle surface textures and contrasting finishes to create unique pieces of fine jewellery.'
