SPOTLIGHT: ANDREW BIRD : NEW PAINTINGS
Studying the coast by boat offers Andrew Bird a unique viewpoint looking inland while being in motion, exposing the geometry of fields, the shapes of the coast and its hidden forms.
Porthminster Gallery is delighted to present a series of 13 new paintings by permanent artist, Andrew Bird. Explorations of composition and colour evoke a deep sense of connection between artist and place in this latest series, inspired by the changeable nature of the Cornish landscape.
Studying the coast by boat offers Bird a unique viewpoint looking inland, while being in motion, exposing the geometry of fields, the shapes of the coast and its hidden forms. Paintings are developed instinctively, often working from memory, to capture the essence of place through intuitive mark-making and layering, in an ongoing visual dialogue of constructing and revealing.
This spotlight is an addition to our existing summer exhibition ‘Safe Harbour’, featuring a collection of fresh and contemporary artworks by: Anne Barrell, Melvyn Evans, Ian Harrold, Freya Horsley, Joanne Last, Martyn Perryman, Mitch Pilkington, Craig Underhill.
This exhibition is complemented by newly acquired sculptures and ceramics by permanent and invited artists, along with works for sale by a selection of Tate St Ives artists who were also inspired by the changing forms of the Cornish landscape, notably: Terry Frost; Barbara Hepworth; Patrick Heron; and Bryan Pearce.
