SUMMER SHOW: EDIT 1 | ANDREW BIRD & JENNY HIRST

27 May - 7 October 2023
Overview

A dynamic new series of Cornwall coastal-inspired abstract paintings and monoprints by Andrew Bird is featured alongside the sublime new collection of paintings of the wild, windswept, rocky shorelines of West Penwith’s ‘hidden’ places by Jenny Hirst, in this two-person solo Summer edit.

ANDREW BIRD | 2023 SUMMER COLLECTION

Inspired by the changeable nature of the Cornish landscape, Derbyshire artist Andrew Bird’s latest painterly, layered explorations in composition and colour evoke a deep sense of connection between the artist and location. Bird’s studies of the distorted geometry of the landscape and coastline is informed from the unique viewpoint of his small boat at anchor and imbues his sixteen works on show with a distinct essence of place.

Andrew Bird’s translation of landscape and nature into abstract vocabularies, had also been the prime concern of several of the key artists associated with the St Ives Movement – notably Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron, Victor Pasmore , and Barbara Hepworth, examples of whose works are also featured in show.

JENNY HIRST | 2023 SUMMER COLLECTION

A frequent visitor to West Cornwall, Cheshire artist Jenny Hirst, uses the exhilarating contrast between home and the Cornish coast to express the changing moods of the sea through dramatic light and shadow on water and sweeping sands disappearing and re-appearing with the ebb and flow of the tide.  Painting in acrylics on canvas, Jenny’s spontaneous and atmospheric paintings leave fleeting impressions of the coast rather than a specific place, allowing and inviting the viewer to bring their own personal interpretation.

This exhibition is complemented by newly acquired sculptures and ceramics by permanent and invited artists, along with works for sale by a selection of Tate St Ives artists who were also inspired by the changing forms of the Cornish landscape, notably: Terry Frost; Barbara Hepworth; Patrick Heron; and Bryan Pearce.
