Overview

‘I have been walking the coastal paths and beaches of St Ives for many years. For me there is no such thing as bad weather. I enjoy the calmness of a summer’s day, as much as the invigorations of a stormy winter walk; the sky full of movement and light as the clouds continually transform. My intention is to produce an image that will trigger such a past visual experience. To create the calmness and clarity of mind that can be achieved when looking out to a horizon; free from the pressure and visual clutter of urban life.’

Martyn Perryman, born in 1963, recently moved to Cornwall and primarily works from his studio at home, in Kehelland, Camborne and also has a converted Sail Loft in St Ives. Through the mediums of oil on canvas and oil on paper, Martyn creates seascapes and landscapes focusing on the horizon. He takes inspiration from regular coastal walks. Martyn will revisit a place returning to the same view point making sketches and colour studies to use back in the studio.

On leaving school Martyn started work as a studio assistant for the sculptor John Rivera president of the Royal Society of Sculptors. From there he moved into retail display working as studio manager at Harvey Nichols London before going on to have his own successful display company for many years. In 2007 he graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and Design (First Class) from Wimbledon College of Art.

Martyn’s work is presently represented by several galleries; he also regularly takes part in exhibitions including the Royal Society of Marine Artists at The Mall Galleries, London. His work is in private collections in the UK, Australia and California. Two paintings are in the Royal Palace Hotel, Dubai.
