Masako Tobita Japanese, b. 1954
NEW COLLECTION NOW ON SHOW
"My work is very personal.
It's all about how I feel and how I react to the environment at the time.
My main tool is walking. Occasionally a camera and a sketch book.
I'm not a great walker but I try as much as I can.
Then I take these feelings and visual memories back to my studio in Hampshire.
I start working on a blank canvas without a particular direction to follow.
In the process of layering marks and colours as well as my thoughts, I usually manage to find the visual destination.
The last time I visited West Cornwall, I was recovering from a serious illness.
I was standing on a cliff near Zennor, a cold wind piercing through my body
urging all my senses to wake up. This familiar magnificent landscape was still there and would be there long after me. I realised that I was a temporary resident in this world."
